Genesis – part 2

Genesis – part 2

Some further aspects of Genesis.

As mentioned before, we must be aware that throughout the whole of the Saturn, Sun and Moon evolutions, spiritual Beings were its leaders and its bearers; and that warmth, air, water are only the outer expressions, the outer garments of spiritual Beings who are the reality. [Rudolf Steiner, Genesis, Secrets of the Bible Story of Creation.]

There are many books and lectures that have been given by Rudolf Steiner which cast a light from ever new viewpoints on these events of the earliest developments so that slowly one can create in one’s mind an imagination which cannot only be grasped but which one feels can be shared with people who have never heard of these spiritual facts. It has been said: Anthroposophy (the wisdom of the human being) is like a huge puzzle where every piece has its rightful place.

Having returned to Rudolf Steiner’s words, that there were spiritual beings who guided and guarded the evolution of our planet Earth from earliest times through the Saturn, Sun and Moon evolutionary stages, one may well ask who were these highly evolved spiritual beings? The plan for creating the planet Earth with its different kingdoms was of course a divine plan. Who were the earliest creators of the Earth with the first beginnings of its minerals, plants, animals and of course the human being?

The evolution began with ancient Saturn. Do we know the beings of ancient Saturn? Yes, those were the highly evolved spirits who lived in the sphere of the Zodiac known as Leo: the Thrones, one of the nine angel hierarchies. They gave of their own warmth which was the very beginning we have spoken of. The Thrones, as beings of will, were so strong that they could start the creation of man as well as of our planet Earth.

Imagine yourself in bed pulling a cover over yourself. You are breathing out your own warmth. However, with the next breath you have to breathe it in again. What the Thrones gave out of themselves through their will, the warmth ether, they left as an act of creation in the cosmos.  It has been described as different balls of warmth ether and heat. One could imagine many ovens all over the cosmos and in these ovens differentiated places of heat, warmth or fire.

On what is called the ancient Sun another hierarchy, the Kyriotetes, the spirits of wisdom, from the Zodiacal sphere of Virgo added the light ether and the air element. “In the elemental sheaths the primeval Spirits pondered the outwardly manifesting and the inwardly mobile.” [Rudolf Steiner, Genesis, Secrets of the Bible Story of Creation.]

In between these evolutionary periods there are always times of rest, also called periods of pralaya, taking place. Everything that happened in these distant pasts involve “lengths of times” which are not humanly measurable.

Between the pre-existing warmth from Saturn and the light ether and air from the Sun an intense activity ensued.

The Verse Uniting All of Us.
 Creating a Circle of Light

Faith, Love and Hope
Will lead me in my willing
When I light a candle and unite
With the ever-present Love of the Almighty
And His Creative Force.
It works in me when I in love embrace all people
Who come to me with
Faith, love and hope.
This verse may lead us on our path
To create a circle of light around the world.
It will unite us and disperse loneliness.
It will open our minds to imagination,
Strengthen our inspiration,
And bless us with intuition.

[In this verse, the word children has been changed to people because there is a child in every person. The word people can be changed back to children when the verse is used regarding the children of a school.]

This verse came as an inspiration to me when I contemplated an ever more intense world of suffering, and it came as an answer from the spiritual world to help and to protect all people. However, in a world where every day the computer speaks louder and more distinct than the heart of a human being many people have lost hope that there is, in fact, a spiritual world. That there is guidance and protection is no longer a reality among humanity today.  This article on Genesis attempts to provide some explanation of how we as modern human beings can begin to find in ourselves the source from which all blessings flow.

Why is it that nowadays there live among us many people who stand before a closed door in relation to the reality of a spiritual world? Because all that is spirit cannot be seen with physical eyes. It cannot be weighed, numbered or measured. This is a fact; yet one could argue when you feel sympathy or antipathy, when you have a positive or negative thought or a will impulse; those very human experiences can also not be seen with physical eyes and one may say that with those experiences we definitely enter into a realm away from the sense perceptible world.  However, we remain in the human realm and connected to the sense world, because all our interactions are bound up with it.

Where then and how do we find the world of spirit which is so much more profound than some feelings, thoughts or the will of a human being? The spiritual world, indeed, underlies all existence in heaven and on Earth and maintains our life on Earth as well as our possibility to evolve.

What does John say in his opening words of the Gospel? In the Beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God … Nothing that was made was made without the Word … and the word was life and life was the Light of Humanity. John talks about the beginning of the world! Is that Genesis? No not yet.

Where lies the pathway to the spiritual world? There must be many because every human being is different.  Christ Jesus gives us at least one answer when He says:  Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of God. [Matthew 18, 2-4; Mark 10;15]

An Outline for this bLog

Glimpse of Light , Natasha Hall

Outline

In the following blog the problem of student violence is being looked at, especially gun violence.

Possible reasons why it sometimes occurs are explored: Lack of love in childhood; technology playing a big role in the lives of today’s children and youths; evolutionary changes in the relationship of soul capacities and the difficulty of counteracting these; egoism taught in today’s team sports.

Remedies are discussed: Participation in artistic activities and a loving environment, as provided in Waldorf education; Christ as the Healer between the counterforces of Lucifer and Ahriman; Faith, Love and Hope; all this in the light of Rudolf Steiner’s indications given in Anthroposophy or Spiritual Science.

Inspiration is mentioned as the source of the idea for this blog as well as for the leading verse.

The three main articles of this blog are: A World Initiative; Encountering our Humanity; and Faith, Love and Hope. At the end of the blog they provide details of what has been outlined here.

Contributions between this introductory outline and the three main articles show the reaction of readers to the problems mentioned and the solutions suggested.

Drew Danniels, Nelson, March 6th, 2017:

Dear Monica,
It’s now been a year since you phoned and told me of a dream you’d had and your conviction to form a vessel in support of teachers.  I was deeply moved then and now I see the Circle of Light is a global movement in support of teachers.

As a (retired) Waldorf Class teacher, I recognize the value and great need the Circle of Light is providing.  Educating children toward freedom, against a background of forces aimed at numbing and dumbing us down, is as difficult as it is necessary and teachers’ faith and hope is vital.  Supporting teachers within their school communities is essential and Circle of Light is awakening all of us to our responsibility. I pass along a verse by Rudolf Steiner that was given to our School in Nelson while in its infancy.  It has helped us over the years and it helps me personally to face difficult times of change and uncertainty:

“We must eradicate from the soul all fear and terror of what comes towards Man, out of the future. We must acquire serenity in all feelings and sensations about the future. We must look forward with absolute equanimity to everything that may come. And we must think only that whatever comes is given to us by a world-directive full of wisdom. It is part of what we must learn in this age, namely, to live out of pure trust, without any security in existence – trust in the ever-present help of the spiritual world. Truly, nothing else will do if our courage is not to fail us. And let us seek the awakening from within ourselves, every morning and every evening.”

Thank you Monica for your tireless efforts toward bringing light, inspiring and sharing your wisdom.

With much love,

Thoughts and Meditations sent in by Members and Friends of the Circle of Light.

Elisabeth Carmack, Vancouver, Feb.2016: What Monica is trying to create through forming a global light building initiative to support Waldorf education is crucial in our time. Institutions that are trying to instill a sense of humanity in our time are vulnerable and are without the necessary resources to renew themselves, and also fall victim to inherent conflicts within their own walls and values.

I spoke at the meeting about how it would be helpful to unite schools through this global light community initiative so that an understanding would be developed that the pathology one witnesses in individual schools could be grasped as a universal trend. For example, I referenced how the imagination can be seen and used as both ‘arresting imagination’ and ‘generative imagination’. The ‘arresting imagination’ is used to strengthen any kind of ideology or fundamentalist belief, whereas the ‘generative imagination’ is used to develop personal freedom and individual identity. Not just in Steiner schools, but in all Anthroposophical institutions you can see ideological belief in conflict with free agency. Originally when Monica approached me about her idea and initiative, I suggested she write a prayer, which could then be used to unite us in our effort.

I think the quotation from Rudolf Steiner’s ‘Truth Wrought Words’ that Monica has chosen to place her initiative in a particular sphere of consciousness is extremely apt. At the first meeting Monica articulated how her vision for this initiative must be of the Christ, yet at the same time was extremely sensitive to how the word ‘Christ’ can lead to alienation in some.

I did not have time to take this up at the meeting, but felt it was imperative to honour Monica’s personal vision for this work. However, I am convinced it would be possible to evolve the idea into something more akin to Soloviev’s Divine Humanity, which acknowledges the ‘world soul’ as developing out of any practice of the higher self… which is endorsed in the third section of the Foundation Stone:

I look forward to seeing you all at our next gathering/meeting

With Warmth!

Elizabeth.

From Blanca Ponec, Vancouver, March 2016:

. parts of man’s being are not arbitrarily distinguishable. They have merged so thoroughly to make the real nature of the human being that one can say: The spirit stems from the spirit land, the soul from the soul world and the physical body from the physical world; these components of the human being stem from three different worlds yet are joined together in man.

And when the human being takes his consciousness away with him out of the physical world, his inner being splits; out of one he becomes three. (Rudolf Steiner, Book of Revelation, Lecture 14, Dornach, Sept.18, 1924.)

What is now a joint activity of thought, feeling and will within man, will in future take on a separate character, and this will come to the fore in various spheres. We are just passing through a time in which humanity is unconsciously crossing the threshold of a significant portal, a fact which is clearly evident to the power of clairvoyance. Humanity passes through this crossing of the threshold in such a way that the spheres of thought, feeling and will become separated. (Rudolf Steiner. The Crossing of the Threshold and the Social Organism.)

Student Use of Mobile Phones
and Digital Devices

Christchurch Steiner School
Christchurch Steiner School

Over the last year, teachers have been concerned about the amount of time students are occupied with mobile phones and digital devices during their free time at school. After many meetings and discussions, the Upper School teachers have written a policy on student use of mobile phones and digital devices which you should have received by email. This policy comes into effect on Wednesday 22nd March. This is a big step for the school, a brave initiative, which we hope will lead our students towards a renewed focus on interacting together in conversation and debate, engaging in social activities, games and sports, and a focus in classrooms on the teachers and learning rather than how to avoid being spotted sending a snapchat to a mate.

Mobile phones and digital devices have an important place in aspects of student learning, particularly in senior classes in which students are preparing to move on to tertiary training or the workforce. This policy has been written to support students in the responsible use of digital devices as a tool for learning. From Wednesday onwards, we are creating zones that are digital device free, namely at all times and in all places except those where teachers have given students permission to use a digital device as part of a specific learning task. No mobile phone usage is permitted from 8.25am until 3.25pm in the school grounds except in designated zones for contacting parents or in an emergency. The designated zones are the school office and upper school coordinators office. Digital devices can only be used in the classroom with teacher permission. Senior students (Class 11 and 12) are encouraged to bring their own device (BYOD) but must sign a Netsafe responsible use agreement/contract tomorrow. The agreement will also be given to Class 8-10 students in the coming weeks as these classes may still use school computers for some class activities. Our intention is to provide more awareness, support and guidance for our ako around responsible use of digital devices, digital citizenship, cyber-bullying and general well-being at school and at home. We hope you can support this at home — ‘mobile phone away / now let’s play’ or some other fun ditty that encourages social activities without the other invisible ‘social media communicator’. The Seven Days of Holy Week

“I refuse to believe that there does not exists, or has ever existed, a person that has not made use of his example to lessen his sins, even though he may have done so without realizing it. The lives of all have, in some greater or lesser degree, been changed by His presence, His actions and the words spoken by His divine voice. I believe that he belongs not solely to Christianity, but to the entire world; to all races and people, it matters little under what flag, name or doctrine they may work, profess a faith, or worship a God inherited from their ancestors.

Mahatma K. Gandhi

A brief look at Holy Week gives us an overview of the events that took place for Jesus and His disciples. The names of the seven days of the week as used in the English and French languages, allow us to see how the seven days of the Holy Week are reflected in the planetary spheres. Through this, everything takes on a new meaning.

Finding What is Real

Finding What is Real

Rev. Jonah Evans

A Contribution to the Circle of Light.

The last couple of days here in Toronto the winds were blowing, the trees bending the leaves swirling. And recently soul winds are swirling across the globe. Storms of fear, anxiety and hate… gusts of anger, shock and uncertainty … these soul winds are bending our human branches, challenging our roots… calling on our soul roots to dig deep.

This is because every human being, like the trees, has roots, inner roots. And these inner roots keep us steady when storms come. Like the trees, our inner roots are nourished, not by the winds and storms of fear and hate arising from personal experiences, we are nourished by the substance and being of The Ground of the World. Human souls are strengthened, not by swaying this way and that with endless arguments, human souls are strengthened by roots that push down into the Father Ground.

Dear friends, let us remember, in this time of soul storms and turmoil, that Christ did not come into the world to support a particular point of view or a particular country. Let us remember that the real world is not what we see in the media. Let us remember that our battle is not with flesh and blood but with spiritual adversaries that seek to fill our hearts with fear and hate. Let us remember that our task is not to fix the world, but to bring love into a broken world. Let us remember that the divine call is still the same as it has always been for centuries. We should not waste our time by trying to eradicate and destroy evil, but in a destructive darkness find the light. Let us remember that Christ walks with all human souls no matter how corrupt, hoping to root us in the Father Ground of the World. Read more

ENCOUNTERING OUR HUMANITY

Encountering our Humanity

The Verse Connecting All of Us.

Faith, Love and Hope
Will lead me in my willing

When I light a candle, and unite
With the ever-present love of the Almighty
And His creative force.
It works in me when I in love embrace all people
Who come to me with
Faith, love and hope.

This verse may lead us on our path
To create a circle of light around the world.
It will unite us and disperse loneliness.
It will open our minds to imagination,
Strengthen our inspiration,
And bless us with intuition.

This verse is the one that creates the Circle of Light around the world. Here I would like to bring some thoughts which could be helpful in explaining the spiritual connection of the first line Faith, Love and Hope with the three last ones: Imagination, Inspiration and Intuition.

If we could go back in time to the 14th century before Christ we would find that at that time human beings still felt carried like children in a large family, loved and protected by the gods. They lived embedded in nature, and in a dreamy way they felt to be part of the spiritual world. Many of them still experienced, perhaps even saw and heard, spiritual beings and not only angel beings, but also nature spirits.

Today humanity lives in the age of the consciousness soul when we learn to connect our logical, sense-bound thought life to spiritual thoughts, finding the way in clarity between spiritual and sense-perceptible facts. The human being must first pass through this stage of the Consciousness Soul if he wishes to receive, after his own fashion, the forces of the Spirit Self, Life Spirit and the Spirit Man. And to this end he must, in the course of the fifth post-Atlantean [Rudolf Steiner, Esoteric Science, an Outline.] epoch, even up to the middle of the fourth millennium, fully unite his being with the forces of death; this lies within man’s power writes Rudolf Steiner.  [GA 185, lecture 5.] In the fall and winter seasons the forces of death can be experienced by each human being in the out- breathing of nature.

Through the consciousness soul, our humanity asks us to realise that evil forces have taken part in the evolution of mankind and still are part of our problems today. They are attempting to prevent the union with the forces of death; yet only what we experience we can learn to overcome.

Referring back to Moses who brought to his people the Ten Commandments given to him on Mount Sinai by Jehovah, the God of the Hebrews, we are told that when this gift was received by Moses, it was accompanied by lightning and thunder, fire and earthquakes. The Ten Commandments were an important step in human development because they required obedience and respect through the presence of the involved nature forces. Humans had evolved in the sense world to the point where it became necessary for them to learn to obey the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness etc. Why had it become necessary to expose humanity to laws or commandments? The answer cannot be given without looking a little closer into our human development.

During the Lemurian epoch, [The Submerged Continents of Atlantis and Lemuria. Their History and Civilization, by Rudolf Steiner, translated by Max Gysi. GA 11.] quite early in the evolution of humanity, Lucifer entered the astral- or soul-body of the human being and exposed mankind to passions, drives, desires and deceit. He planted temptations in the human soul.  Man would have remained a child in the hands of higher, divine-spiritual beings, had this not taken place. Independence would not have been established in the human soul. It did not happen so because Lucifer had approached man and made part of the underlying spiritual world invisible to him. The personal instincts, passions and desires which arose in the human astral body spread a cloud of darkness over the spiritual beings of the world out of which man is born and who would otherwise have remained perpetually visible to him. Faith, Love and Hope – Revisited

Faith, Love, and Hope
Faith, Love, and Hope

The Verse Uniting All of Us.

Faith, Love and Hope
Will lead me in my willing

And His Creative Force.
It works in me when I in love embrace all people
Who come to me with
Faith, love and hope.
This may lead us on our path to create
A circle of light around the world.
It will unite us and disperse loneliness.
It will open our mind to imagination,

And bless us with intuition.

In his book Knowledge of the Higher Worlds and its Attainment, Rudolf Steiner[1] writes in the last chapter, Life and Death: The Great Guardian of the Threshold, that the supersensible world came first and the physical, sense world developed out of it. “We see that, before we entered the physical world for the first time, we ourselves belonged to a supersensible world.” When one knows this, and thinks of the verse Faith, Love and Hope one could ask: From where does its power arise to protect and guide us and to help us in difficult situations? Are we not children of the spiritual hierarchies? One can also ask, where would we find the origin of the three human soul faculties: faith, love and hope, what do they mean to us, and how is it possible that the verse which unites us rests fully on these three faculties?

In a lecture Joan Sleigh[2] touched on these three faculties. Her topic was connected to the Michaelmas festival: Helplessness and Powerlessness. What new approaches or strengths can each of us find to overcome these? Her suggestion was that we must begin to unlearn our logical, intellectual, earth-bound thinking and to consciously focus on creative thinking. In this way, we can open a door to inspired thinking. She referred to three soul faculties to overcome powerlessness, and they are faith, love and hope.

The gesture of faith,” she said, “is needed, as a person steps out into the unknown and says ‘yes’ to destiny. The gesture of love is needed, as one expands oneself to include others. And the gesture of hope is needed, as one opens to the endless possibilities of becoming selfless and engaging in new activities. It is important to ask for guidance from the spiritual world during this process and to include others as we go about freeing ourselves from being stuck.

When these three human faculties of faith, love and hope are thought of in our verse, it was said that they take on a protecting, guiding and transforming capacity, important for every human being on his or her path through life. They will reveal great wisdom when one takes a closer look at what they actually mean to each one of us, and when one considers their relationship to us during the human evolution.

Regarding FAITH, Rudolf Steiner shares with us that in the past people said, “What I believe, I know for sure.” Those people were not natural scientists, but they were certain, intuitively, that they were right. They believed in forces of the soul out of a deep connection with a supersensible world. Still today there lives, next to materialistic science, a deep conviction in people that they carry in themselves an inner force of faith. Rudolf Steiner said, “These are forces of which every soul should become increasingly aware because they are forces which look up to the spiritual world.”

How do we use the word faith in our language? We have faith in guidance and protection; we have faith in our own ego-strength. When we struggle with difficulties we have faith to overcome them. We also can experience faith when we give a task to someone that he or she will complete it to our expectations. Read more

A World Initiative

A World Initiative

An early morning intuition after a deep sleep began for me with a very difficult realisation: I was at fault. What had I done? The news once again presented me with a frightening picture: A young man with a gun in his hand had cold-bloodedly shot another human being. This news was accompanied by a desperate feeling that connected itself to our increasing technology and its effect on youths and on children.

It is a fact that such a deed is only possible if the shooter has a deep-seated feeling of anger, lack of reasoning and tries to get even, by applying his will without any feeling whatsoever for his victim’s future and his own. This could have been avoided by a harmonious upbringing, in peace and quiet. Love and caring for babies, young and older children is lacking in many homes today. It is not realised that this lack shows up in later years. Is it due to technology, to a change in values or to time available among family members? Children of all ages begin to play with technical devices in schools, indeed, already in kindergartens, even in cribs. Ever new ideas appear on the market to fascinate also the youngest. In many families, both parents are required to work full time so that their children are becoming more and more dependent on their cell phones, i-pads etc. It is rare that imaginative story books are read to or by the children. All this turns out to be a restricted way of upbringing. As a result, in many cases thinking is over-activated and trained in the growing child. ***

It is important to remember that the human I or ego always expresses itself through thinking, feeling and willing. Only a harmonious interaction between these three soul faculties helps the growing person when he or she becomes a young adult. It is necessary that all three soul faculties be developed evenly because they are expected to play their part in later life. As our time has evolved into a technological age, only thinking is required for many school subjects. Google becomes our guide in research projects rather than classroom teaching. A living relationship from human to human has been exchanged for a calculating search tool for finding a goal. This trend continues, of course, in young adults while life in many homes has moved away from gatherings for family meals, from interesting discussions and making music together. In short, what was called quality time, being together, has turned into a social life where most young people are left to their own devices. Many of them watch movies which are either inappropriate for their age or harmful because of portrayed violence. In sports, young people prefer competitive games to cooperative ones, and they are given less opportunities to become physically active themselves because ever more school work is asked of them. So they prefer to watch these games on a screen rather than get out and play them with friends.

One can observe that another factor enters the picture: thinking, feeling and willing begin no longer to harmonize. Our evolution has entered a time where thinking, feeling and willing slowly separate from each other. Eventually they must be held together by the developing ego or I. Around the twenty-first year this begins to become possible. In the past, this separation of soul faculties did not take place. Each deed of the will was automatically weighed in the light of thinking and the warmth of feeling.

How can humanity find a solution to this problem?

Comment by Giselher Weber

People of all religions pray to God. In this verse He is called the Almighty. The Christ has come into the world for the benefit of all human beings, not only for that of Christians. He has said: I and the Father are one (John 10:30). Although in the verse above, Christ is not named, He is described as the ever-present love of the Almighty and His creative force.

On that day you will know that l am in the Father and you in Me and I in you (John 14:20). Does it not follow from this word of the Christ that He will be with, even in, all of those who connect with Him in their heart?

And so, those who act in accordance with the verse above, can feel assured that the Christ, God will be with them and will give them strength in their endeavour.

Faith, Love and Hope

An Introduction to The Circle of Light

On an evening in February 2016, members of the community gathered at the home of Monica Gold. Monica had called us together to share something of great importance — she wanted to tell us of an inspiration that had come to her early one morning prior to this. She described to us that, on that particular morning, upon waking from a deep sleep, there was before her a terrible feeling about something, and it seemed as though it was her problem. As she still lay in her bed, this feeling was revealed to be a desperation for the world and what is happening in our time because of the separation of thinking, feeling and willing, as a result of the progression of humanity’s evolution. In particular, she felt these were struggles and difficulties present in Waldorf schools. And with this was the feeling that we have done nothing about it.

Then came the question from Monica to us, “What can we do?” A thoughtful discussion followed. Questions arose: We asked ourselves how we might approach this? Whom would we approach? What qualifies our evolving humanity? Could the Christ be asked to help us? We agreed that we would meet again at a later date to continue our exploration of how to guide this newly formed initiative. The morning after our meeting, upon awakening, The Verse Uniting All of Us was given to and received by Monica, and shared with the rest of us.
